Summary: Volunteer medical assistants and EMTs participate within the health care team to provide efficient and quality primary health care

Supervisor: Clinic Director

Requirements:

  • Current Connecticut EMT license or certificate of completion of MA program
  • At least 21 years old
  • Complete application process and orientation
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and age groups
  • A passion to help the underserved
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a dedicated team of volunteers and staff
  • Sensitivity and a clear understanding of patient confidentiality
  • Sound understanding of and commitment to AFC mission and philosophy

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Clinic Director and nursing staff as needed
  2. Intake including height/ weight, vital signs and health history
  3. Prepare patient for provider exam
  4. Perform point of care testing such as urine dipsticks, quick strep tests, finger stick glucose and hemoglobin (as trained/signed off on)
  5. Assist the primary care provider with procedures as needed
  6. Provide patient instruction and educational materials under guidance of nursing staff
  7. Discuss concerns regarding patient with clinic director and provide community referrals as appropriate
  8. Ensure complete and proper documentation of all patient care and instruction in patient medical record; notes must be cosigned by RN
  9. Maintain patient confidentiality
  10. Follow universal precautions, infection control principles and general clinic polices
